Wildwoods Launches New Family Program
Tribes
The Wildwoods Foundation proudly announces the launch of the our newest program Tribes: a Wildwoods family day camp.
Wildwoods Foundation founder and executive director Dwain Wilson tells how Tribes came to be.
"The impetus for Tribes has been our conversations with parents of children who have participated in our school-based Full Circle program. When we would describe the program activities to the parents, more often than not, the reaction was a wistful “I want to do that!”
"To address that desire, our challenge was to shrink eight full days of programming for 10-year-olds into a half-day program suitable for families with children of all ages. While there are certain Full Circle activities, for one reason or another, that are inappropriate or impossible in a day camp setting, we tried to select the activities that have been most popular with the school students.
"As we began to piece these activities together we realized a theme. All of these activities are things that native families would have engaged in together 300 years ago. With our primitive skills activities (fire-making and cordage) as the cornerstone, these day-to-day activities were moments when families came together to share and teach and learn. Lessons of the elders were passed on to the young. Traditions and oral histories passed from one generation to the next. The skills that the children acquired were not only necessary for the families’ survival, but they were rites of passage into adulthood. This is the spirit in which we create Tribes."
 With a spectacular view of the downtown Los Angeles skyline, the Tribes program is based at the beautiful Vista Hermosa Park, 100 N. Toluca St., Los Angeles, CA 90026.
The Tribes program is conducted in English and Spanish and is free to all families, but reservations are required. Children must be 8 or older.
