Web of Our World
Web of Our World
The Wildwoods Foundation proudly announces the launch of Web of Our World.
Web of Our World is the online learning component of our Full Circle program serving elementary schools in Los Angeles. Full Circle is a community-building program that uses ecology as a springboard to help students understand the importance of nature’s principles in their own neighborhood: Interdependence, Sustainability and Diversity.
Beginning with two photo expeditions (one in the Santa Monica Mountains and the other in their own neighborhood), Web of Our World allows students to build a website that compares their community with nature.
Each class that participates in Full Circle builds their own Web of Our World site. Developed with classroom teachers, the Web of Our World sites are built around reflective questions employed in the classroom: "Who We Are, What We Did, Where We Went and What We Learned."
“The idea is to introduce kids to the principle of interdependence through exploration of nature’s ecosystems,” says Wildwoods Executive Director Dwain Wilson. “Then, throughout the rest of the program’s activities, they are able to begin applying those same principles of interconnection on a social level – back in their classroom, in their homes and in their community.

“Exploration is the key thing,” Wilson continues. “Often the challenge is to get children to look at familiar surroundings with fresh eyes. That’s where the cameras come in. There’s something about looking through a viewfinder that shifts their perspective. And what are absolutely amazing are the images that the kids capture. As you look at them you begin to understand that kids really do see the world in a very different way than adults.”
Principal Paula Bennett of Mayberry Elementary sums up the benefits of Full Circle and the Web of Our World project by saying, “Full Circle has really made a big difference with our students and in the way they treat each other. Web of Our World has changed the way they look at their community. There’s a new sense of commitment and concern among the children. It’s wonderful to see.”
With all content - photos & text - developed entirely by the students, Web of Our World is a record, by each class, of their Full Circle experience. Web of Our World is wonderful way to see the world through a child’s eyes.
We’re not selling anything. We’re not asking for money. We’re just showing off the kids’ work. So, we invite you to come by and look around. www.WebofOurWorld.org
