Eco-X: Exploring Urban Ecology

Eco-X:
Exploring Urban Ecology is a 12-part program for the 4th through 6th grade classroom or after-school hours.

Eco-X is a new approach to the study of ecology for urban students.  In the past, ecology has generally been presented as something that exists only in nature (outside of the city) or is represented in the city as bits of nature: the park, trees, animal life, etc.  Indeed, while those things are part of the urban ecological landscape, they are not the whole story.

The word ecology comes from Greek, meaning “study of the household.”  We translate that to mean a study of the “household” of all living things.  In the city, that means our houses, our schools, our neighborhoods, our community and all that is contained within.  Thus, the Eco-X approach to ecology presents the urban ecosystem as something that is very much a part of the “big picture” of nature, not something separate and apart.

With hands-on activities and games, students reach these goals of perception while having fun in a safe learning environment.  Eco-X gives students an opportunity to reconsider and even re-imagine their built environment and explore a deeper understanding of the resources required for urban living. The systems theory that provides the framework of the Eco-X curriculum helps students build a clearer understanding of these new ideas and will provide them an insight that will serve them across the academic spectrum.
